BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Fits Whatever You Have In Mind

Recently I had the opportunity to join SMG Cape Town at their launch day of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, which made its South African debut on the 24th January 2015.

This five-seater MPV is the latest addition to the BMW product offering aimed at young, active people who need space for their daily activities and lifestyle and competes directly with the likes of Mercedes-Benz’ B-Class. The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a first for BMW as it also has BMW’s first-ever front-wheel drive system, the first of what could be a possible a new line-up of BMW front-wheel drive cars. A 2 Series Active Tourer all-wheel-drive option should be coming later.

BMW says the car was designed for those who want it all, a car that is both dynamic and functional. It fits whatever you have in mind in daily life, as well as in your spare time and offers a spacious and versatile interior for everything you might want to take with you on your next adventure.

Starting at R 378 000 for the 218i and going up to R 447 000 for the 225i, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer comes packed with a bunch of standard features. Standard features across the 218i, 220i, 220d and 225i range include:

  • Keyless engine start;
  • Automatic Start/Stop function traduce fuel consumption;
  • Performance control to improve cornering agility;
  • Driving-dynamic control systems;
  • Driving experience control;
  • Electronic parking brake;
  • Automatic boot operation;
  • Rain sensor and automatic headlight control;

Over and above the feature packed list of standard features, 2 standard features really stood out to me, BMW intelligent emergency calling and BMW TeleServices.

BMW Intelligent Emergency Calling

BMW Intelligent Emergency Calling is a telematics service with manual emergency calling via SOS button and automatic emergency calling in case of an accident. Transmitted data to the BMW Call Centre includes information like vehicle location, severity of accident and status of the front airbags and seat belts. This feature will also be available while road-tripping in your 2 Series Active Tourer in Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland.

BMW TeleServices

Coupled with the telematics service that makes the Intelligent Emergency Calling, possible is the BMW TeleServices, an automatic and manual service needs transmission and initiation of breakdown assistance. Depending on the situation, service information is transmitted on an as-needed basis to the 2 Series Active Tourer owners preferred BMW Dealership. So if its your brake pads that need replacing or your car needs to come in for its next service, BMW TeleServices will let you know whats wrong before you need give them a call. An excellent feature considering how busy you will be on your 2 Series Active Tourer Adventures.

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer also has BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology and a bunch of other tech built into the car. The BMW 218i Active Tourer automatic shares the same engine as the new Mini Cooper, which has 100kW and 220Nm and, according to BMW, averages combined fuel consumption of around 5.2L/100km, the 220i puts out 141kW and 280Nm with a combined average of around 5.8L/100km, the 220d sips around 4.5L/100km on its 140kW and 400Nm and the 225i kicks out 170kW and 350Nm and averages around 5.9L/100km.

While the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer may very well be one of the best offerings among competitors, only time will tell just how well it competes.
